i expect

That people grow wiser as they grow older.  But some grow up to be lonely, old, bitter and twisted.

Irwin I wasn't a Steve Irwin fan. But the guy had more heart, and honesty and humanity than this appalling woman.  Steve Irwin had a family whom he loved and who loved him, a nation who adored him and millions of fans around the world.  That he was killed in a freak accident - an unprovoked attack by a stingray that struck him in the heart is a tragedy. That news of his death spread like wildfire around Australia and around the world - by phone, email, word of mouth - as it did in my office - even crashing internet news sites, says something. Today we learn that he had the presence of mind to pull the stingray barb out of his heart before he died.

Presence of mind is not what one associates with Germaine Greer either.  She was quick to brandish the whip to bring herself to attention. And all we want to do is disown her.  Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if news of her death was greeted with the refrain: ding dong the witch is dead.

Don't you think your post is on about the same level as her article? When she dies, I'll remember not to check your blog.

Greer is clearly desperately clutching to maintain her name in the public spotlight, stretching out that modicum of fame from 30 odd years ago.

You're safe. I won't be the one singing or writing about her death.

And LIC - precisely. Maybe I should have said lonely, old, bitter, twisted and desparate.

Notice how Greer adopts the superior environmentalist mantle with her pocket of Queensland rainforest. And then reveals she keeps a domestic cat there: the biggest killers of native wildlife known to man. Silly old moo!

Bwahahaha, you're right Slatts! Heh, bet she's got a broomstick as well, horrible woman.

You know, I used to like Germaine. I used to think she was one of the few who boldly went where etc., etc. Then came the hebephilic stuff, and the Big Brother appearances.

Is she senile, or hsa she simply gravitated for self-regarding performance artist to frankly barking moonbat?

I have no idea Rob. Her heyday was before my time, and she has not really demonstrated any redeeming features in my time. I just think she's a bitter, twisted, self-centred lonely old woman.

The inner yob emerges in the most unexpected places.

Germs was comissioned by the Guardian specifically to write something other than the prevailing gush from all and sundry who falling over themselves with sentimental twaddle over oridnary bloke Steve Irwin. i did my bit too. However, while there is breath in my body, I will defend Germaine because I think she is one of the few women alive and vocal today who fully understand that the world has not actually in the last 40 years gotten terribly much better for ANY OF ITS WOMEN. Indeed in most countries OURS INCLUDED the situation has gotten worse with a whole bunch of young conservative YOB men rising through the ranks, who get around convinced that they own the joint and that women like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton represent the ideal woman.

BTW Thanks Kent--always an exception to the prevailing lowest common denominator.

Well I doubt you will find me defending Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as representative of the ideal woman any more than I would hold up Germaine Greer as representative of anything other than Germaine Greer.

Greer had a choice to either (a) not take the commission or (b) display some common decency to a family which had barely had time to assimilate the news much less bury their dead or (c)
write something other than sentimental twaddle without being a self-centred pratt.

But wisdom, much less intelligence, is not one of her strong points.

And if you think things have gotten worse - apart from telling that to the older women in my family - I can assure you that I don't buy girlie magazines full of Britney and Paris, but I'm guessing it's mostly women who do.

So come on Link, you're a strong intelligent woman - explain that to me.
